Super Garden Furniture selected Keruing hardwood to be used in the manufacturing of many of our outdoor furniture products including the outdoor dining furniture, patio sets and more thus is a great wood for outdoor living and entertaining guests.
Keruing is the name given to approximately 70 species of Dipterocarpus. It is a common specie of hardwood and has been used extensively for truck trailer components, framework for boats, boardwalks, bridges, flooring and wharf decking due to its ability to wear well in diverse conditions.
The heartwood varies from light to dark red–brown or brown to dark brown, sometimes with a purple tint; the heartwood is usually well defined from the gray or buff-colored sapwood. If left unstained or untreated this wood will eventually turn to a silver grey driftwood color.
Keruing is denser than oak, maple or teak which makes it quite resistant to shock and it is extremely hard wearing. Because of the strength of this wood we are able to create beautiful outdoor dining furniture sets without the bulky thickness of lesser woods. Even without the thicker bulk they exceed the strength of cedar or many other outdoor furniture wood species.
Through prolonged weathering without treatment some surface roughness may develop but over time the natural weather process will stabilize. Some small cracks or fissures may appear but these are only on the surface and in no way affect the structural integrity or strength of the wood.
Keruing is not an endangered wood species and is FSC certified as a renewable wood source without destroying old growth forests.
Super Garden Furniture/MDK is proud to be an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) board member as well as SCS (Scientific certification Systems of California) certified: FSC-SECR-0036.
